The immortal love story of Lucia Pearsall continues to echo through the valleys of Himachal Pradesh. In the historic town of Nahan, Sirmaur district, the old British-era cemetery at Villa Round remains a site of pilgrimage for lovers and visitors alike.

Here lies a tale of enduring devotion that locals often describe as the epitome of true love: "If love is to be, let it be like this."The story centers on British woman Lucia Pearsall, who waited 38 long years after her husband's death to be buried beside him.During the princely state era, Lucia accompanied her husband, Dr. Edwin Pearsall, to Nahan. Dr. Pearsall served as the Chief Medical Superintendent (or Medical Officer) to the Maharaja of Sirmaur for approximately 11 years.

He passed away on November 19, 1883, at the age of 50. As per his own wish, he was buried with military honors in the northern section of the historic Villa Round area in the Catholic cemetery—a spot he had personally selected. At the time of his death, Lucia was 49 years old. Known for her kind-hearted nature and popularity in the state—much like her husband—she chose not to return to England.

She left behind her homeland and even her other family members, driven by her profound love for her husband. In 1885, Lucia invested significant funds to have her husband's grave properly constructed and made permanent, underscoring her unwavering commitment. Her wait finally ended on October 19, 1921, when, at the age of around 87, Lucia passed away while remembering her beloved husband. Honoring her final wish, the Maharaja of Sirmaur ensured she was laid to rest beside Dr. Edwin Pearsall in the same cemetery.

Though the Pearsall couple is no longer among us, their graves—adorned with architectural artistry—stand as a timeless symbol of immortal love. Every Valentine's Day on February 14, this extraordinary story resurfaces on people's lips, reminding all that true devotion knows no boundaries of time, distance, or even death. The site in Nahan's cemetery continues to draw visitors, who come to witness the final reunion of two souls bound by an unbreakable bond.
