Palampur, June 29 (Bijender Sharma): The nation on Monday remembered Captain Saurabh Kalia, one of the earliest heroes of the Kargil War, on his birth anniversary. Born on June 29, 1976, Captain Kalia continues to inspire generations with his extraordinary courage, patriotism and supreme sacrifice. A special commemorative programme was organised by his family and admirers in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, to pay tribute to the brave soldier.

More than 26 years after his martyrdom, Captain Kalia’s family is still awaiting justice for the inhuman torture he and his fellow soldiers allegedly suffered while in Pakistani captivity. Despite repeated appeals over the years, the family’s long struggle to have the incident recognised as a grave violation of international humanitarian law remains unresolved.

Among the First to Expose the Kargil Intrusion

Captain Saurabh Kalia, an officer of the 4 Jat Regiment of the Indian Army, was among the first to detect and report the Pakistani intrusion in the Kargil sector, providing crucial information that alerted Indian forces to the scale of the infiltration.

On May 15, 1999, Captain Kalia and five soldiers—Arjun Ram, Bhanwar Lal Bagaria, Bhika Ram, Moola Ram and Naresh Singh—were on a routine patrol near the Bajrang Post in the Kaksar sector of Ladakh when they were captured by Pakistani forces.

According to Indian official accounts, the six soldiers were held in captivity for nearly three weeks and subjected to severe torture before being killed. Their mutilated bodies were returned to India on June 9, 1999, triggering nationwide outrage and condemnation. India has maintained that the treatment meted out to the soldiers violated the principles of the Geneva Conventions.

A Son of Palampur

Born in Amritsar on June 29, 1976, Captain Saurabh Kalia spent his formative years in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. He studied at DAV School, Palampur, and later graduated from Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University before being commissioned into the Indian Army in 1997.

Though his military career was brief, his courage and devotion to duty earned him a permanent place in the history of the Indian Armed Forces.

A Memorial That Inspires Future Generations

A memorial dedicated to Captain Kalia has been developed near the scenic Neugal Khad in Palampur. The site features exhibits related to the Kargil War, statues of soldiers, landscaped gardens, a lake, an aquarium and other visitor facilities. Today, it serves as both a tribute to the fallen hero and an educational destination that inspires patriotism among visitors.

The Family’s Pursuit of Justice Continues

While the nation remembers Captain Saurabh Kalia every year with deep respect, his parents continue their decades-long campaign seeking international recognition of the alleged torture inflicted upon their son and his comrades during captivity.

Many believe that honouring Captain Kalia's legacy is not only about remembering his sacrifice but also about ensuring that justice is pursued for those who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.

Captain Saurabh Kalia's courage, unwavering commitment to duty and ultimate sacrifice remain a shining symbol of patriotism, reminding every Indian of the price paid to safeguard the country's sovereignty.
