October 27 Marks Infantry Day, Remembering the Historic 1947 Srinagar Landing
New Delhi: India observes Indian Infantry Day on October 27 every year to honour the courage, dedication and sacrifices of infantry soldiers who have defended the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Also known as Shaurya Diwas, the day commemorates a defining moment in India's military history when Indian Army troops were airlifted to Srinagar on October 27, 1947, to defend Jammu and Kashmir against invading tribal forces backed by Pakistan.
The Historic Events of October 27, 1947
Following the Partition of India in 1947, Jammu and Kashmir faced a serious security crisis. Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to India on October 26, 1947, paving the way for the deployment of Indian troops to defend the state.
On the morning of October 27, the first contingent of Indian Army infantry soldiers, belonging to the 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment (1 Sikh), landed at Srinagar airfield. The troops were tasked with securing the airfield and stopping the advance of the invading forces towards Srinagar.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, the soldiers demonstrated exceptional courage and determination under extremely challenging circumstances. Their timely arrival helped secure Srinagar and enabled further Indian Army reinforcements to reach the Kashmir Valley. Lieutenant Colonel Rai laid down his life during the operations and was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery.
The Role of Infantry in India's Defence
Infantry is the largest fighting arm of the Indian Army and plays a crucial role in defending the nation's borders and responding to operational challenges across varied terrains. From high-altitude mountains and dense forests to deserts and plains, infantry soldiers operate in some of the most demanding conditions.
Their responsibilities include defending strategic positions, conducting ground operations, supporting counter-insurgency missions and working alongside other branches of the armed forces during military operations.
The infantry's effectiveness depends not only on weapons and equipment but also on discipline, physical endurance, teamwork, tactical skill and the ability to make critical decisions in difficult situations.
A Tribute to the Bravehearts
Infantry Day is an occasion to remember the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. Ceremonies, including wreath-laying at the National War Memorial, have been organised to pay tribute to fallen soldiers and recognise the contributions of serving personnel, veterans and their families.
The day also highlights the values that define the Indian Infantry: courage, selfless service, professionalism, comradeship and unwavering commitment to duty. The sacrifices of soldiers and the support of their families remain an integral part of India's military heritage.
Infantry Day 2026: Remembering a Legacy of Valour
On October 27, 2026, the nation marks another Infantry Day, reflecting on the historic events of 1947 and paying tribute to generations of infantry soldiers who have served India with dedication and courage.
The occasion serves as a reminder that national security rests on the commitment of those who stand guard in challenging conditions, often far from their homes and families. Their service represents a continuing legacy of duty, sacrifice and devotion to the country.
Indian Infantry Day is more than an annual observance. It is a tribute to the soldiers whose courage, discipline and sacrifice continue to inspire the nation.
Jai Hind! Salute to the Indian Infantry.
