India bids a heartfelt farewell to General V. N. Sharma, the 14th Chief of the Army Staff, whose distinguished military career was marked by unwavering dedication, exemplary leadership, and selfless service to the nation.
General Sharma belonged to one of India's most illustrious military families. He was the youngest brother of Major Som Nath Sharma, India's first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1947–48 Indo-Pak War.
His father, Major General Amar Nath Sharma, served as Director Medical Services of the Indian Army. He was reportedly offered the prestigious position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), an honor he declined in order to continue serving his country.
Military service ran deep in the family. His eldest brother, Lieutenant General Surindra Nath Sharma, who is over a century old, served as the Engineer-in-Chief of the Indian Army, while his sister also served the nation with distinction as a Brigadier in the Army Medical Corps.
General V. N. Sharma's own legacy reflects courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to India's security. Throughout his career, he inspired generations of soldiers with his integrity, discipline, and dedication to duty.
As the nation remembers one of its finest military leaders, heartfelt condolences are extended to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
Om Shanti.
