Satluj Removed from OTT in India, Centre Orders Fresh Review Amid Growing Controversy

New Delhi, July 7: The debate surrounding Satluj, starring Diljit Dosanjh, has taken a fresh turn after the film was withdrawn from streaming in India just days after its release. The Union Government has reportedly initiated a fresh review of the film, reigniting discussions on censorship, artistic freedom and the portrayal of sensitive historical events.

Originally developed under the title Punjab '95, Satluj is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and traces his fight to expose alleged enforced disappearances in Punjab during the 1990s. The film premiered on ZEE5 on July 3 but was later made unavailable for Indian viewers while remaining accessible in select international markets.

According to reports, the Centre sought the film's temporary withdrawal over national security concerns and asked for a detailed reassessment before allowing further streaming. The decision has sparked criticism from political leaders, filmmakers and civil society groups, many of whom argue that the film deserves to be judged on its cinematic and historical merit.

The issue has also entered the political arena, with leaders from Punjab urging the government to reconsider its decision and ensure transparency in the review process. The controversy has once again brought the spotlight on content regulation for OTT platforms and the balance between creative expression and public sensitivity.

Despite the row, Satluj has earned widespread appreciation from critics, with Diljit Dosanjh's performance being hailed as one of the finest of his career. The film's realistic storytelling and emotional depth have also received praise from audiences and reviewers alike.

The government's review is now expected to determine whether Satluj returns to streaming platforms in India or undergoes further modifications before its release.
