Jwalamukhi - A research poster highlighting a potential breakthrough in kidney stone prevention was presented during Pharma Anveshan 2026 at the Laureate Institute of Pharmacy.
The study, titled “Evaluation of the Protective Role of Sitagliptin in Ethylene Glycol-Induced Calcium Oxalate Nephrolithiasis in Rat Model,” was presented by Sidhant Sharma along with his research team from the Department of Pharmacology.
The research focused on calcium oxalate kidney stones, one of the most common urological disorders. The team emphasized that oxidative stress and inflammation play a key role in stone formation and kidney damage.
According to the findings, Sitagliptin demonstrated significant nephroprotective effects in the experimental model. The drug improved urinary parameters, including increased urine output and pH, while reducing calcium, oxalate, and other lithogenic factors responsible for stone formation.
In addition, the study showed improvement in renal function, with decreased levels of urea, creatinine, and uric acid. The drug also exhibited antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, reducing key markers and protecting kidney tissues from damage.
Researchers noted that the effects were dose-dependent, with the 20 mg/kg dose showing the most effective results, comparable to standard treatment.
The presentation was well received by participants and added valuable insights into ongoing pharmaceutical research aimed at developing safer and more effective treatments for kidney stone disease.
