A personal trek through forests, folklore, and breathtaking views of the western horizon
Jwalamukhi (Kangra), March 21: Amid the serene hills of Himachal Pradesh, a quiet yet compelling destination near Surani, along the Jwalaji–Khundian road, is drawing attention for its natural beauty and unique vantage point. Nestled in the lush green stretches of Kali Dhar, this lesser-known hilltop offers an experience that blends adventure, nostalgia, and scenic grandeur.
The journey begins not just on the road, but in the mind. Inspired by a traditional Kangri folk song—“Thandi thandi hawa jhuldi, jhulde cheelan de dalu o, jeena Kangre da”—this correspondent felt an irresistible pull toward the hills. The melody, echoing the essence of Kangra’s natural beauty, became the driving force behind the visit.
Accompanied by a family member, the trip commenced on a motorcycle due to limited public transport availability. The winding and serpentine roads, characteristic of the region, led to the base point in about an hour. From there, the real challenge began.
A steep, zigzag footpath cut through dense forest terrain, demanding both stamina and caution. The trek, marked by uneven stones and obscured trails, posed risks of encounters with wildlife, including wolves and reptiles. Despite the physical strain, the journey through shaded pine groves offered moments of relief and reflection.
Midway through the ascent, the landscape transformed dramatically. A vast, green pasture emerged—reminiscent of the idyllic meadows often described in classical English nature poetry. It was here that the emotional and cultural connection to the Kangri song became vividly clear, underscoring the deep bond between the region’s natural beauty and its folk traditions.
At the summit stands a modest structure of iron bars and brick, marking the highest accessible point in the area. Local accounts suggest that, on clear days, one can view distant landscapes stretching toward Lahore in Pakistan with the aid of binoculars. Though such equipment was unavailable during this visit, the unobstructed horizon allowed for a striking visual of the expansive plains to the west.
The panoramic view, especially during sunset, offers a rare and tranquil spectacle—where the sky meets the land in a seamless blend of light and shadow. The experience leaves visitors with a profound sense of peace and connection to nature.
This hilltop, though relatively unexplored, holds immense potential as a destination for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers. However, experts advise that visitors should be physically prepared and cautious, given the challenging terrain and dense forest cover.
As Himachal Pradesh continues to attract tourists to its popular destinations, hidden gems like this hilltop near Kali Dhar serve as a reminder of the region’s untouched beauty waiting to be discovered.
