New Delhi | Crimson Spring and Navtej Sarna: Grace in Words, Firmness in Character

The conferment of the Sahitya Akademi Award on Navtej Sarna for his English novel Crimson Spring marks a significant moment in India’s literary landscape. Rooted in the tragic events of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the novel revisits a defining episode that reshaped the moral and political contours of India’s freedom struggle.

It is worth recalling that the very spelling “Akademi,” instead of “Academy,” reflects a conscious assertion of cultural identity—an idea associated with India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Even in nomenclature, there was an effort to root institutions in an Indian ethos.

Sarna’s achievement, however, extends well beyond this single work. He represents a rare confluence of diplomacy and literature—an accomplished civil servant, translator, and columnist whose writings are marked by historical sensitivity and intellectual clarity. His poetic English rendering of Zafarnama, originally composed in Persian by Guru Gobind Singh as a letter to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, stands as a testament to his literary finesse. In translating a text that is both spiritually charged and politically defiant, Sarna preserves its moral force and timeless relevance.

In public service, Navtej Sarna distinguished himself as one of the longest-serving spokespersons of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, serving under Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh. He later represented India as Ambassador to the United States and Israel, and as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom—roles that demanded both diplomatic tact and firm judgment.

What stands out in Sarna’s career is not merely the range of positions he has held, but the consistency of his character. Known for his principled approach, he has demonstrated an ability to remain steadfast even in situations marked by pressure or influence. Such firmness, coupled with intellectual grace, defines his professional and literary persona alike.

The recognition of Crimson Spring is therefore more than a literary accolade; it is an acknowledgment of a life that bridges governance and creativity, discipline and imagination. At a time when both public discourse and literature face competing pressures, Sarna’s journey reaffirms that elegance of expression can indeed coexist with strength of conviction.

In celebrating Navtej Sarna, one celebrates not just a novelist, but a voice that continues to lend depth, dignity, and discernment to contemporary thought.
